Individual Therapy, often called, psychotherapy or counseling, is a process by which you, work one-on-one with a trained therapist to explore your feelings, beliefs, or behaviors. You meet in a safe, caring, and confidential environment to work through challenging concerns or influential memories. You and your therapist work together to identify aspects of your life that you would like to change, better understand within yourself or in relation to others. Thereby, setting goals to work toward the desired change together.
Our families are our greatest treasure. It the one environment where we hope to truly find the love, acceptance, and understanding that we crave as human beings. When that support is present it can be a powerful source of strength and encouragement in our lives. However, there are times, when our family systems start to crumble; whether by behavioral issues, conflict, betrayal, illness, loss or another stressful situation. It is during these times when you may need to reach out for assistance from a professional to help you and your family reconnect, communication more effectively, and/or rebuild the trust that may have been broken.
There is a theory that a person shouldn't seek out a "healthy" relationship until they have it all together themselves. And that, unless you are completely happy with yourself you should not seek out a partnership with another. Well none of us has it all together. Most of us are looking for love and a partner to share our lives with. No one enters a relationship 'baggage free", nor is everyone often "happy" with every single aspect of themselves. However, the more you come to understand yourself the more capable you will be of helping someone else understand you. In couples therapy, you will come to be understanding and empathetic to the person you have chosen to partner with.
Sometimes, couples mesh well and get along with one another easily and can help one another grow. However, at times, unfortunately, that is not always the case and sometimes our own past hurts and experiences create a barrier to us being able to express love, give healthy communication, understanding and compassionate forgiveness for mistakes in relationships. That is when couples therapy can help, by assisting you and your partner to see where you have become stuck or lost in past hurts or pain rather than being able to be the loving and kind partner you really wish to be. Couples therapy can assist in providing skills and guidance to create change in your own behavior and that of your partner, for the purpose of nuturing your relationship. The goal is for couples to grow in trust, love, empathy, forgiveness and compassion. However, there are times that no matter how much you and your partner tries, one or both of you may, come to see more clearly, that your relationship is just not going to work. This realization can be quite sad, painful and difficult to be a part of. Yet, in time it can be quite rewarding to see you and your partner learn to communicate more effectively and take a step toward more productive lives.
